Three S-E gridders pegged for Section III all-star game

SAUQUOIT – Three Sherburne-Earlville seniors were selected to play in the 2010 John Arcaro Memorial Senior Football Classic on Thursday night at Sauquoit Valley High School.
Running back Greg Duvall, safety Ethan Johnson, and defensive tackle Eric Eichler will represent the Marauders in the annual All-Star tilt, which pits the best from Section III Class B-C-D East against the top seniors from Class B-C-D West.
Duvall rushed for a team-high 718 yards and eight touchdowns in 2010 despite not making his first career start at running back until October. In his five starts, Duvall eclipsed the 100-yard mark four times, including a career-best 146 yards against Unadilla Valley-Edmeston in the season finale. He also caught six passes for 52 yards and it’s no coincidence that S-E posted a 5-0 mark with the shifty senior tailback shouldering the rushing load.
Johnson anchored a vaunted S-E secondary, as he finished among the top-five in all of Section III with six interceptions, including three in a 42-7 trouncing of Little Falls. Johnson ran back one of the three picks for a 35-yard touchdown, and he had another score called back by a block-in-the-back penalty that occurred well behind the play. The 6-foot-1 senior also showed his ability as a devastating tackler coming up with several big hits from his safety slot en route to finishing the season with 28 tackles.
Eichler was the catalyst of a stout Marauders defensive unit that allowed just 10.1 points per game in 2010, and held its opponent to seven points or less in all six of its wins. Eichler was disruptive from his tackle slot, constantly wreaking havoc in the opponents’ backfield. Eichler finished the year with 28 tackles, one sack, and a fumble recovery. Thursday’s All-Star contest will kick off at 6 p.m.
