Power restored to 800 NYSEG customers following transformer explosion
OXFORD – Homes and businesses along the Route 12 corridor between Oxford and Norwich were without power for much of the night and into the morning hours.
According to Emergency Management Officer A. Wesley Jones, the outage was caused by a transformer explosion which occured at approximately 11:25 p.m. on County Road 32 just south of the Half Way House Bridge.
“Initially the power was out from the south end of Norwich to Oxford, and into Preston,” Jones reported. The Chenango County Public Safety Building, the New York State Veterans’ Home in Oxford and Walmart are all located in the area affected by the outage.
NYSEG’s Chief Lineman Dan Ryan reported that 800 NYSEG customers were without power after the incident. According to Ryan, service was restored to the majority of those customers shortly after midnight. He said power was restored to the remaining 350 customers at 7:40 a.m.
One of the last areas to be restored was along the Route 12 corridor south of the Half Way House Bridge to the intersection of State Hwy 220 just north of the Village of Oxford. Crews from the New York State Department of Transportation work station in Oxford were on hand directing traffic at that intersection until power was restored to the traffic light.
According to Jones, a single-car accident was reported immediately following the transformer explosion. The emergency management officials said the vehicle apparently hit a utility pole when its driver swerved after seeing the flash from the exposion. The driver sustained no injuries, he reported.
