Norwich netters acquit themselves well

SYRACUSE – At the New York State Tennis Championships, Norwich juniors Bryn Loomis and Sophie Stewart acquitted themselves, but dropped two close matches on Saturday at the Eastside Racquet Club.
Loomis and Stewart, making their second appearance in the tournament in as many years, went three sets with seventh-seeded Minte Tamoshunas and Emily Rubenstein of Orchard Park losing 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-2. In the consolation bracket, Loomis and Stewart again went to a tie-breaker in a pro-set format dropping a 9-8 (7-5) match to Fayettville-Manlius’ Allison Vizgaitis and Carley Romano.
The Tornado netters were coming off a Section IV championship just a week ago, a step up from last year’s runner-up finish. Norwich coach John Stewart said his duo did not accomplish its goal of winning a match at the state tournament, but he was proud of their performances.
“Every time I didn’t think they could play any better, they did,” Stewart said. “I was really happy with the way they played, and they proved they belonged. We played two great matches, unfortunately, we came up short.”

Norwich third at sectionals
OWEGO – Nine Norwich girls qualified for the sectional finals next week, and the Tornado team finished third overall at the Class B meet last weekend.
Freshman Erin Gawronski had Norwich’s best finishes. She was third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:48.62) and fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:27:76). “It’s been a long time since we have done this well, since before I took over the program,” said Norwich coach Amanda Downey of her team’s performance.
Sara Loomis was fifth and sixth respectively in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles; Kerstin Franklin took sixth in the 100-yard butterfly, and Shannon Curley was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke. Taylor Zieno, Rachel Zieno, Krissy Stroh, Ravyn Benedict, and Catherine Eaton all reached the consolation finals, Downey said, and each reached their season goals.
