Norwich City Schools adjusts election districts
NORWICH – As of Jan. 1, residents of the Norwich City School District may find themselves heading to different polling locations for district elections.
The changes are a result of a resolution adopted by the board of education Monday night, which will alter the school system’s election districts and polling places.
After the first of the year, all residents of the City of Norwich and towns of Norwich, North Norwich, Oxford, New Berlin and Guilford will vote in one location: the St. Bartholomew Parish and Community Center, 73 East Main St. in Norwich.
The parish center was used as the polling location for the City of Norwich for the first time in Nov. 2’s general election.
“It worked phenomenally,” said board member Tom Morrone.
Morrone and fellow board member Sally Chirlin helped engineer the change. Their interest and intent, according to Superintendent Gerard O’Sullivan, was to “simplify the process, eliminate confusion and make it easier for people to vote.”
After first broaching the topic in July, Morrone and Chirlin have been in contact with the Chenango County Board of Elections, the New York State Department of Education and other resources to explore the district’s options and ensure the legality of using the church facility.
Using the parish center will cost the district $300 per election, O’Sullivan reported.
Voters in outlying areas of the district will continue to use their current polling locations. Residents of the towns of Plymouth and Smyrna who fall within the Norwich school district will vote at the Plymouth Fire House, 3461 State Route 23, South Plymouth. District residents living in the towns of Preston, Pharsalia and McDonough will cast their votes at the Preston Fire Station, 124 County Rd. 19.
Barring a special election, the first time voters will experience the change will be at during the next school board election and budget vote, scheduled for May 17, 2011.
