Tractor trailer brings down service lines in city during early morning accident
NORWICH – A tractor trailer traveling through the city this morning brought down a number of utility lines after two automated arms accidentally extended several feet above the moving vehicle.
The two metal arms caused the explosion of an electrical transformer and disrupted Internet, cable and electrical services for a number of homes along Pleasant and Plymouth streets. The truck drove more than half way around the block before stopping and also knocked down several large tree branches.
The Norwich City Police Department, along with repair crews from Frontier Communications, NYSEG and the city’s Department of Public Works, responded to the incident at around 5:38 a.m.
Crews were still conducting repairs to the area by 9 a.m., but technicians at the scene said all services were nearly restored.
Resident Tim Green had his phone and cable wires and a large piece of siding torn from his house at 56 Plymouth St.
“There was just a loud bang and a big flash of light. The transformer blew over there,” said Green, motioning just down the street.
The Norwich Police have not yet issued any tickets in the accident and the investigation is continuing.
