Cyclones' A team wins thriller

NORWICH – The Norwich Cyclones’ “A” team beat Sherman Park of Syracuse 14-13 Sunday at Ulrichs Field to advance in the Empire State Classic Pop Warner tournament.
The Cyclones took the opening drive 73 yards to the Bulldogs’ eight only to fumble the ball away. The Cyclones’ defense stiffened with Nicholas Murphy and Carlos Ithier recovering Bulldogs fumbles inside the 10. Ithier stopped a Sherman Park runner at the one-foot line, in what looked to be a safety.
Tristan Rifanburg reached paydirt on a six-yard TD run, with John Marvin kicking what proved to be the winning two-point conversion at the 7:48 mark of the second stanza.
The Cyclones’ ball-control offense controlled time of possession and kept the ball away from the swift Bulldogs for an 8-0 halftime lead.
Sherman Park returned the second half kic-off 76 yards for a touchdown and scored another quick TD in the third for a 13-8 lead. The Cyclones took back the lead for good on a 20-yard TD run by Rifanburg in the third for the one-point lead.
Both teams threatened throughout the final period, but could not reach the endzone.
Tristan Rifanburg carried the pigskin 30 times for 134 yardswith Matt Craig pounding for good yardage also.
The Cyclones’ defense, led by Craig, Spencer Stone, Rifanburg, Ithier, Marvin, Murphy, Everett Thompson, and Cameron Edwards, continually came up with big defensive plays.
The Cyclones have a bye this weekend, and will play Rochester Southwest in the semifinals in Rochester, tentatively on Nov. 20. These teams met last year in the semifinals in Syracuse with the Cyclones losing, 14-12.
