Public hearing to address Rt. 12 rehabilitation project in Greene

GREENE – The New York State Department of Transportation will hold a second public hearing to discuss proposed improvements to a 5.5-mile segment of state Route 12 from just south of Genegantslet Road (county Rt. 2) to just north of Harbor Road (county Rt. 3A) in Chenango County.
The hearing is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17 in the Greene High School auditorium, 40 South Canal St.
The hearing is necessary due to modifications made during the project’s design phase and subsequent additional property acquisitions.
The primary project objective of the project is to address the pavement, safety, and drainage, using cost-effective strategies to extend the useful life of the roadway. Secondary objectives are to implement Rt. 12 corridor recommendations, along with additional turning and passing lanes where practical, to improve reliability and mobility.
In order to complete the project, some right-of-way acquisitions will be necessary. Acquisitions under this project will allow for the widening of Route 12, an on-site detour and for project stream work and maintenance. NYSDOT is engaged in ongoing communication with property owners who may be impacted by the acquisitions.
The meeting format will consist of both an open house and a formal presentation. NYSDOT representatives will be available to discuss the project with interested citizens and public officials in an informal setting from 6 to 7 p.m. A formal presentation will begin at 7 p.m. The presentation will be followed by a comment session where people will be given the opportunity to express their views concerning the economic and social effects of the design plans, their impact on the environment, and their consistency with the goals and objectives of such planning as has been promulgated by the community.
A court reporter will be available to record the formal public comments. People in need of a sign language interpreter, assisted listening system or any other accommodation should contact NYSDOT. Those who cannot attend this meeting, but have questions, comments, or would like to discuss the project in further detail should contact the project manager, John Fitzgerald, at the NYSDOT, 44 Hawley St., Binghamton, NY, 13901; by telephone at 721-8575; or by email at R09-PIN901634@dot.state.ny.us.
