Arts Council opens Members Exhibit next week

NORWICH – The Chenango County Council of the Arts, Norwich, announces the opening of its annual Members Exhibit on Friday, Nov. 19, with a reception from 5-7 p.m. at the Mariea Brown and Raymond Loft Galleries, 27 West Main St.
All members of the Council of the Arts are invited each year to display artwork during this exhibit. Drawing, painting, photography, stained glass, fiber art and pottery are displayed and, in many cases, available for purchase.
The exhibit will be juried by Carl Houghton and Lori Wilson.
Carl Houghton has been a working artist in Chenango County for many years. He started as an art teacher at BOCES and, after several years in the United States Air Force, he returned to become the high school art teacher in New Berlin. From there he became the supervising art teach in the Poughkeepsie public school system and he completed his teaching career in the New Berlin/Unadilla Valley school system. After retiring, he took up painting and exhibiting full time. He teaches private art lessons in his home studio. Carl has done many one-person shows and exhibits in museums, galleries, libraries, financial institutions and colleges from Cooperstown to Charlotte, NC. He has received numerous Best in Show awards; Student Honor shows at Syracuse and Cornell; Outstanding Leaders in Elementary and Secondary Education award; Airman of the Year USAF; and has had three works accepted to an International Show in Boston. As an artist, Carl is unique because he is color-blind. In his Artist Statement, he says that he is often asked, “how do you do it?” His answer is “. . . that the creative process is a mixture of a struggle and opportunity for any artist; my specific disability has been a source of frustration, but also a chance for me to stretch myself beyond the comfort zone of my own physiology.”
Lori Wilson is the Application Specialist at Golden Artist Colors, Inc, an employee-owned manufacturer of acrylic materials for professional artists. She tests and helps develop products for both decorative and fine art markets, serves artists with technical assistance and conducts workshops for practitioners in both fields. An important aspect of her job is to continuously learn about new products, techniques and uses of materials. Lori participates in an annual color projection project to stay in touch with changing color trends, she has worked abroad as a consultant to decorative painters in Shanghai, China and on a high profile job in London, England. In 2005 and 2007 she studied trompe l'oeil and mural painting in Italy with Pascal Amblard, Sean Crosby, Pierre Finkelstein and Nicola Vigini and has studied further with several decorative painting “masters”. In 2008, she presented a lecture entitled: “Modern Materials and Technique: Decorative Craftsmanship in the 21st Century” at the Architectural Paint Research Conference held at Columbia University in New York. Lori earned her BA degree in fine art and art history from Hartwick College and her MA in art history focusing on glass from the Victoria University of Manchester in Manchester, England and has spent over three years training in Europe.
Winner of Best in Show and other categories will be announced at the opening, which will be catered by Casual Catering. The event is free and open to the public. The Members’ Exhibit is sponsored by the Thomas and Esther Flanagan Foundation.
