Greene dialed in for state semifinals tilt

Last year’s field hockey state championship game was a blur for Greene head coach Sue Carlin. In that game, the Trojans scored in the first half, and went on to blank Section I’s Mamaroneck, 1-0.
That was the sixth state title for Greene, and tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, Greene (18-0) will put its unbeaten record on the line in a rematch of last year’s championship clash. The Tigers (18-2-1) advanced out of the regional finals last Saturday defeating Kingston, 2-1 to return to the state semifinals.
Carlin remembered little of her encounter with the Tigers a year ago, but was fortunate that a parent in attendance videotaped the win. “I watched the game earlier this week to see their corners and if anything else might be useful for this game,” Carlin said.
What did Carlin actually learn from the video? “Wow, we played pretty well,” she said.
Led by senior tri-captains Chrissy Conroe, Anna Crumb, and Erin Smith, Carlin said the 2009 squad was on a mission, and would not be denied. It was that collection of seniors that suffered the heartache of a 2008 overtime loss in the state semifinals.
Turns out, that 2008 defeat was the last time Greene found itself on the short end of the scoreboard. The Trojans have rattled off 38 wins in a row – 30 by shutout – and have only trailed twice over the past two seasons.
The Trojans have maintained the winning by staying composed and remaining confident in their teammates’ respective abilities. Whitney Point and Walton were the lone teams to have Greene on the bottom side of the scoreboard, but those contests were turned around with patient, measured offense. Later in the year, Greene needed two overtime wins to keep the perfect record intact – the latter contest a 1-0 state playoff win over Section III’s Baldwinsville last week.
“What we try to do is play our style of play with good passing and teamwork,” Carlin said. “If we can stick to that...we’ve played under pressure and been able to get through it.”
The overall dynamic of the Trojans’ 2010 squad is not quite the same as the state championship team. But Carlin said this year’s team is getting close to that level of intensity. “We’ve had a really good week of practice,” Carlin said. “The last couple of days, they’ve been feisty and really dialed in. I hope that carries over.”
The winner of Friday night’s game returns for the Class A state championship game Saturday at 2 p.m.
