Cupcakes for a cause tonight
OXFORD – Who has the fairest cupcake of them all? That’s what judges at tonight’s Cupcake Euphoria will be trying to determine. The event, a pre-holiday family celebration sponsored by the Oxford Community Youth Center, takes place from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the Oxford High School’s performing arts auditorium. Admission is $1 or a non-perishable food item.
“Usher in the holiday season with decadent desserts, art, music and local confectioners,” invites Linda LaRosa-Mosner, who helped organize the second annual event.
Proceeds support the Youth Center’s After School Program, which provides a safe place for middle schoolers to go after the school day at no charge to parents. The canned goods and non-perishable food items collected at the door will be donated to the Oxford Food Pantry.
According to Mosner, this year’s Cupcake Euphoria will feature “hundreds of decadent desserts,” all donated by local restaurants, caterers and bakeries.
“We are celebrating how lucky we are,” the organizer said, of the response they have received from area businesses.
The cupcakes, in all of their various forms, will be available for purchase at $1 each. Both hot and cold beverages will be provided.
For now, organizers are keeping mum about the entries.
“The list will make your mouth water,” promised Mosner.
Each entry will be sampled by a panel of judges – which includes Canasawacta Country Club’s Sue Ryan, Kelly Banks of Kelly Banks Cakes and The Evening Sun’s own Melissa Stagnaro. Awards will be given out to the “fairest” fairy cake of them all in three categories: best tasting, best decorated and most creative.
This year’s cupcake contributors include Baker’s Maple; Belvedere & Margaret Rosa Cafe; Canasawacta Country Club; Clachan Coffee House; DCMO BOCES Culinary Arts Department; American Legion Auxiliary from Fort Hill Post 376 in Oxford; Garf’s Deli; Hoppies; Ideal Sweets; J&K North Star; Karolyn’s Krossroads Cafe; Kelly Banks Cakes; Mimi’s Italian Cuisine; Nathanael Greene’s Publick House; Ontario Hotel; Parson’s Daughter; Price Chopper; Special Occasion Cakes by Patty Izzard; Roma’s Pizzeria; The Caboose Diner; The Stadium; and the Village Cafe & Bakery in Greene.
There will even be a little something special for 4-legged family members: “HOWL-iday” cannolis contributed by the Houndstooth Bed and Barkery in Bainbridge.
Other local businesses, including Fred’s Inn, have also gotten involved by donating items for a raffle, Mosner said.
Rounding out the evenings events will be performances by members of the Oxford Middle School Band, under the direction of Julie Soloman. Student artwork will also be on display as part of a “Sweet” exhibit, organized by HS art teacher Joni Eaton.
