Cyclones lose in state semifinals
ROCHESTER – The Norwich Cyclones took on the best that Rochester could offer, and came up short, 19-13, in the Empire State Classic semifinals here Saturday.
Rochester Southwest scored the winning touchdown with 51 seconds remaining in the game.
The Cyclones scored first on the game’s opening possession with a 16-play, 63-yard ball-control drive. Tristan Rifanburg scored from one yard out with 1:12 remaining in the opening quarter.
Southwest scored on a pair of long-distance TDs in the second to take a 12-6 lead. The Cyclones struck paydirt 25 seconds before the half on a 14-yard pass from Rifanburg to Matt Craig that was set up by a 40-yard pass from Rifanburg to Everett Thompson. Rifanburg added the point-after run for a 13-12 Cyclones halftime lead.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Southwest scored the winning TD on an 8-yard run.
The Cyclones finished the season at 10-1 and were 20-2 over the last two seasons. The only blemishes over the past two seasons were hard-fought defeats to Southwest in the Empire State Classic state semifinals.
John Marvin, Rifanburg, Craig, Spencer Stone, Nick Murphy, and Dan MacIntosh led the Cyclones “D,” this weekend, which stopped Southwest most of the game aside from two long TD runs.
The Cyclones wish to thank the community for their continued support of the football and cheerleading programs. Also, thanks go to all the volunteers, coaches, parents, and financial supporters of the 180 Cyclones boys and girls.
