Teen struck in crosswalk Friday returns home
NORWICH– An Earlville teen was struck by a jeep along a City of Norwich crosswalk on East Main Street Friday and airlifted to an area hospital with head and leg injuries.
Norwich Police reported that 18-year-old April Stevens was airlifted by the Life Net of New York helicopter based in Sidney to the Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City.
Police said the victim suffered leg and head injuries after being partially pulled beneath the eastbound jeep during the collision.
Harold Stevens, April’s father, reported Tuesday that she had been released from the hospital and the family is hoping for a full recovery.
Norwich Police Officer Loriann Maerz said the accident occurred at 6:50 p.m. Friday night while the teen was walking across East Main street in the area of the Norwich Fire Station and the parking lot entrance to the Tops supermarket with her mother.
Following the incident, EMS crews immediately ran from inside the fire station to aid the victim.
Maerz said the driver of the jeep, 39-year-old Richard Franklin of Norwich, was ticketed for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
