Historical Society seeks help in identifying old photographs
NORWICH – The Chenango County Historical Society – as part of its renovation and reconstruction of the future Research Center at 43 Rexford St. – is asking local residents and historians for help identifying a number of old photographs.
Dozens of photos, the majority of which are dated between 1900 and 1950, have been unearthed throughout the development of the proposed Research Center, according to Historical Society Director Alan Estus. A smaller number of the photos have been traced back to the late 19th century, he added.
“We’re looking to find any information possible on these pictures and we’re asking the local community for any help they can possibly give us,” stated Estus. “All of these pictures, to the best of our knowledge, are related to Chenango County and its local history.”
The photographs feature all manner of subject material, including families, one-room schoolhouses, local events, businesses, places, people and historical structures, some of which no longer exist.
“If there’s any information out there at this time, this is the best way for us to preserve it for future generations,” said Estus. “Once that knowledge is lost, it’s gone for good.”
The effort to locate, collect and sort through the collection of historical photos is being spearheaded by former Historical Society board member and Treasurer Tom Knapp, added Estus, who said the ultimate goal is to utilize the Research Center’s improved technology to make search and retrieval capabilities more efficient.
“We would welcome anybody at this point who thinks they may have information on these pictures, their input and their help,” stated Estus. “Anyone with specific knowledge on a specific topic or time period, historically speaking, would be a plus at this point.”
The Research Center, which has a tentative opening date of early summer 2011, will be home to thousands of local documents, records and books, said Estus, in addition to the large number of photographs. The plan is to digitally archive the historic information and images, making it much easier to locate and retrieve, he added.
“We have some images here that are quite impressive,” said Historical Society Museum curator Diane Hamblin. “We’re always looking for volunteers in a wide variety of museum activities, including this one.”
Those interested with helping the Historical Society identify the photographs may contact the Historical Society Museum, 45 Rexford Street, at 334-9227 or Hamblin via e-mail at dianehcchs@roadrunner.com.
