Gilbertsville host its Historic Home Tour

GILBERTSVILLE – From 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, the Gilbertsville Free Library will host its sixth annual Christmas Historical House Tour. The town was documented 13 years after the American Revolution ended in 1796, but was actually settled nearly 30 years earlier before America was even a country. The entire Village of Gilbertsville is on the National Register of Historical Places.
The area is well known for its pre-Civil War homes; in fact some are more than 170 years old. The library was itself was built in 1818, explained Village Improvement Society member Diana Heeman.
“It’s always a great time for everyone and there is a lot of really interesting sights to see,” said Heeman.
Every winter season, the Gilbertsville Free Library hosts its annual “Dressed for the Holidays,” a Tour of Historic Gilbertsville which features several homes. The non-profit organization uses the annual event as one of it major fundraisers.
“People agreed to put their home on the tour because they are very proud of these houses and their history. We’re thankful we’re able to be able to use their homes for our fundraising effort,” said Gilbertsville Historian Leigh C. Eckmair.
This year’s annual historic tour will feature these homes:
• The 1870 Porter House owned by Michelle and John Birdsall.
• The 1893 Linn Deitz House, owned by Susie Beddoe and Larry Armstrong.
• The 1898 Palmer House, owned by Sara Sands and Allen Anderson.
• The 1820 shoemaker’s house, so named for its 120 years of shoemakers and their families living there. Owned and beautifully restored by Wayne and Jean Tyson.
• An 1850s house owned by Mark and Lynn Talbot.
Also on the tour is the 1835 Empire House, the 1834-35 Christ Episcopal Church, and the 1893-95 Gilbert Block.
Along with the historic tour a gallery of decorated trees, “Nature Through the Lens of Paula Friedman” will be on display inside the Gilbert Block on Commercial Street in downtown Gilbertsville.
The Gilbert Block Ice Cream Shop and the Gilbert Block Quilt Shop will offer special hours during the tours.
Tickets are on sale at the Gilbertsville Free Library for $9 in advance,  $10 at the door and children 12 and under for free.
Eckmair said the tour is run by volunteers and all proceeds benefit the Gilbertsville Free Library.
For information regarding the event, contact 783-2731 or 783-2832.
A map of the area tour and information about the homes will be provided and the library will also be open for anyone wishing to take a look, said Eckmair.
