Trio from NHS selected for NYSSMA Conference Concert

NORWICH – Only the very best in high school vocal talent are offered an opportunity to perform with the New York State School Music Association’s Conference All State Mixed and Women’s Choirs, and this year Norwich High School will send an unprecedented three students to the annual event, according to NHS Choir Director Mary Mayo.
Altos Breanna Guiffre and Hayley Chwazik-Gee, along with soprano Courtney Becker, will travel to Rochester today to begin rehearsals for the NYSSMA Conference All State Concert, reported Mayo. Chwazik-Gee and Becker will perform at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday with the Women’s Choir, while Guiffre will perform at 10 a.m. on Sunday with the Mixed Choir. Both performances will be held in the Eastman School of Music Theater in Rochester.
“This is the highest honor for a public school choral student and it’s the first time we’ve had three students selected at one time,” stated Mayo. “This is an exceptional group.”
According to Mayo, the three were selected based on their May 2010 performance at the NYSSMA Solo Festival, held in Norwich, where all three received perfect scores. In all, the three NHS students beat out approximately 10,000 other candidates throughout the state.
All three of the talented vocalists are section leaders in the Mixed Choir and members of the Madrigal Singers, she added.
“I’m excited and I worked hard on my NYSSMA solo, and I’m glad that’s paying off,” said Chwazik-Gee, who portrayed Cosette in the NHS production of Les Misérables in April of 2010, an extremely challenging role according to Mayo. “I’m glad I’ll be performing with a chorus where they really care about the music and they’re motivated to learn more.”
Guiffre and Becker shared in Chwazik-Gee’s excitement – the three are close friends outside of school – and Guiffre said she loves the idea of performing with such an advanced group of students and sharing in the educational experience.
“It’s going to be very professional, especially the instructors and conductors,” added the alto, who Mayo said gave a “breathtaking performance” as Fantine in Les Misérables.
Becker, president of the Mixed Choir and a skilled pianist and violinist, according to Mayo, summed it up for the trio.
“It’s a great opportunity and we’re excited to work with such hard-working people, people who are excited to be there,” she stated.
