OWEGO – A week after cruising past Owego in the finals of the Tom Schwan Tournament, Norwich found the road to victory over the Indians Friday night much bumpier.
The Tornado overcame a poor start and a 12-point deficit to defeat Owego for the second time this season. The Tornado missed their first nine shot attempts and were 2-for-18 from the field the first eight minutes. “We played very poor offense in the first quarter,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “We settled for jump shots off the first pass, then stood and watched. We didn’t play with a lot of effort at either end of the floor.”
Abbott used 10 players in the first quarter to find some chemistry on the floor. What ultimately worked was playing more aggressive on the offensive end to put Owego on the defensive.
Dennis Oralls was 4-for-4 from the foul line in the second stanza, and Jacob Kelly made 3-for-4 from behind the charity stripe as Norwich closed the deficit to one point at halftime.
After an even third quarter, Norwich grabbed the lead and held it in the fourth despite four Owego three balls.
Jon Foulds, held to just seven in the game, scored on a basket, and followed that with a three-pointer. Sophomore Kyle Edwards also connected from beyond the arc to give Norwich breathing room. Oralls helped secure the win making 7-of-8 from the foul line to finish with a team-high 15 points. Oralls added eight rebounds and six assists, while Seth Thomsen pulled down a team-high 11 boards. For the game, Norwich went 21-for-26 from the foul line.
“The one good thing that came out of this is that we did win the game,” Abbott said. “Maybe the subplot was that we learned a lesson, and that need to be ready to play in the first quarter.”
Norwich hosts Elmira Free Academy Tuesday in a non-league matchup.

COPES CORNERS – G-MU could not have started its contest with Deposit Friday night any better.
Senior Tanya Barnes hit a three-pointer on the Raiders’ first possession and first shot of the game. G-MU outscored Deposit 24-0 in the opening quarter, and extended the lead in the second to 30-0 before the Lumberjacks scored their first points.

“Watching warmups, I thought it might be a tough game because (Deposit) had some good looking athletes,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “We pressed for the first time in a couple of years, and that jump-started us into some good things. We were able to get a couple of easy baskets, and it just snowballed from there.”

SHERBURNE – Bainbridge-Guilford, losers to S-E in the tournament finals last year, took command of Saturday’s championship game in the second quarter outscoring the Marauders 15-4. Leading S-E by just four entering the fourth, the Bobcats held the Marauders to just one basket to pull away.
“B-G was playing some good defense, but we also did not do a good job of executing our offense,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “When we did execute, we missed some shots in the paint. We also had some key turnovers at times when we needed a basket, and we didn’t rebound well either.”
Tournament M.V.P., Randi Conway, led B-G with 11 points. Chelsi Rosa and Shania Vandermark each added 10 points apiece.
Caitlynn Adams scored 13 points and Bridget Irwin had 10 for the Marauders.
Hamilton used a 17-5 third quarter to shoot past Unadilla Valley and win the tournament’s consolation game.
Katie Weeks hit five three-pointers in the first half for Hamilton keeping her team in striking range, while Jordan Peterson scored most of her 13 points in the second half. “The first time we watched Hamilton, Peterson had all the points, and we concentrated on her in the first half,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “Weeks had those threes, so we shifted some of our focus toward her. Peterson came out and had a big third quarter, and they went into a trapping zone that we couldn’t adjust to.”
Amanda Off scored 16 points to pace the Storm, who host Deposit Tuesday.

GREENE – Greene dominated the offensive and defensive boards, and had 13 steals in routing Deposit on Saturday.
Every player on the Trojans’ roster found the scoring column. Jeff Carlin led a balanced offensive attack with 10 points, and Joe Beckwith added nine. “We kicked in our full-court press, and we had some easy turnovers,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “It kind of went from there. Every had an opportunity to contribute good things.”
Greene finished with 13 assists and connected on 6-of-10 shots from beyond the three-point arc.
The Trojans (2-1) play at Harpursville Wednesday.

G-MU 64, Deposit 28
COPES CORNERS – G-MU could not have started its contest with Deposit Friday night any better.
Senior Tanya Barnes hit a three-pointer on the Raiders’ first possession and first shot of the game. G-MU outscored Deposit 24-0 in the opening quarter, and extended the lead in the second to 30-0 before the Lumberjacks scored their first points.
Barnes finished with 28 points and seven assists, and Brianne Lambert added 14 points as G-MU evened its record to 2-2 on the season.
G-MU will play at Edmeston on Tuesday.

S-E Tournament

Hamilton 52, Unadilla Valley 44
