“Spirit of Christmas” coming to New Berlin Saturday
NEW BERLIN – This weekend, area churches and the Village of New Berlin will be coming together to celebrate the “Spirit of Christmas.”
On Saturday, church volunteers, firemen and students will be handing out food baskets, toys and clothing donations to local families.
A few blocks away, other volunteers for the Village of New Berlin and the Freemasons will be welcoming children to see Santa Claus at the Masonic Lodge along North Main Street.
From 1 to 3 p.m., parents can take their children to the lodge and get their picture taken with Santa Claus, sponsored by the village. Besides the free photograph, refreshments and crafts will also be available.
The event is a combined effort of New Berlin churches and the Unadilla Valley School district, whose students help collect donations.
“This truly is what the Spirit of Christmas is all about. It’s when the whole community helps those less fortunate and brings their families together,” said Village Trustee Terry Potter
Originally organized by the First United Methodist Church, the Spirit of Christmas has grown into a non-denominational event including St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church, all in New Berlin, along with St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church of South New Berlin and the South Edmeston Community Church.
The Spirit of Christmas will be giving away its collected items to need-selected families by appointment at the New Berlin Fire Station Saturday. The gift baskets typically contain a family-sized Christmas ham, a large bag of vegetables, several pieces of fruit, canned soups, peanut butter and jelly, a box of candy canes and some packages of pasta.
Last year, the drive offered donations to more than 30 families and their 80-plus children.
“This is through the great generosity of our local community. It’s not one individual’s efforts, but a joining spirit of good will that makes this possible,” said Rev. Charles Taylor of St. Andrew’s and St. Matthew’s.
