NORWICH – Several minutes into Wednesday night’s home game with Elmira Free Academy, Norwich had just two points on the board, it trailed by four points, and NHS head coach Mark Abbott decided to sub out his entire starting lineup.
“We just looked awfully ragged offensively,” Abbott said of his team’s start. “We missed some chippies and had some careless turnovers.”
Off the bench, sophomore Kyle Edwards and senior Frank Somich hit three balls, and Edwards added two free throws as part of an 8-0 run to give Norwich the lead for good. Edwards had 11 points by halftime and finished with a season-best 15.
“We put in five new guys to give (Elmira) a new look, and our bench gave us a big spark,” Abbott said. “It also got our first group more emotionally involved. They (the starters) weren’t disappointed at all, and were supportive. When they came back into the game, they had more energy. It wasn’t that they weren’t playing hard, they just weren’t playing well.”
Norwich had a 12-point lead at halftime, and managed to work that advantage up to 54-27 with under two minutes left in the third quarter. Dennis Oralls scored nine of his 13 points, while Seth Thomsen and Jon Foulds each had a pair of buckets.
“We played very well in the third quarter, and it was a pretty solid effort after the first quarter,” Abbott said.
Norwich (4-0) is at Susquehanna Valley on Friday, and travels to Johnson City next week to face a rugged, athletic Wildcats club.
“We have two tough tests coming up,” Abbott said. “SV is big and strong, and JC is very fast and athletic. We’re neither of those, but what we do have is good skill and a lot of heart. I’m sure we’ll be ready to play on Friday.”

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley had its best offensive game in three seasons, and hammered that fact home with a 34-point second stanza to create a 52-14 halftime lead over winless Deposit Wednesday.
“We had to have shot over 75 percent in that quarter, and that included making four three-pointers,” said UV coach Matt Osborne after his club’s first win this season. “We changed up defenses, and that confused them. On offense, we spread the ball around, we were patient, and we took good shots.”
Justin Hofer had three treys in the second stanza on his way to a team-high 18 points. Travis Conklin scored 17, while Brett Smith and Mason Talbot bucketed 10 apiece.

DELHI – Four games into the 2010-2011 season, Oxford earned its first win, and it didn’t come easy.
Trailing Delhi by four points with under a minute to play, Andrew Golden drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one. On the next possession, Oxford guard Justin Schray picked up a steal. That led to Golden’s short jumper from the corner of the foul line with 11 seconds left. It was the first lead for Oxford since the late stages of the first quarter. Delhi’s final shot attempt was off the mark, and Booker Davis grabbed his 18th rebound of the game. Davis also led the Oxford offense with 16 points. Golden scored 13.
“We’ve had four different high scorers in four games. I think we’re starting to jell a little bit,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis. “We only made two shots outside the paint all night. We did a good job getting the ball inside and making Delhi stop us.”

BAINBRIDGE – B-G rallied from 12 points down at the half only to come up a few points short in Wednesday’s home game against Unatego.
After closing to within 49-47, B-G had possession of the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead. Unatego earned a defensive stop, and Travis Woods scored at the other end to push the lead back to four points.
“It was just a great game,” said B-G coach Ben Nelson. “We whittled our way back, but couldn’t quite get over the hump.”
Woods scored seven of his 12 points in the second quarter staking his club to a 32-20 halftime lead.
B-G junior, Ryan Porter, had a team-high 16 points. Steve Patten and Brooks Harmon each tickled twine for nine points apiece.

COPES CORNERS – G-MU played its first game in 12 days, and dispatched visiting Edmeston on Wednesday to deal the Panthers their first loss of the season.
Eddie Ray Cotton hit three three-pointers to finish with a career-high 20 points. DeMario Reed added 12 in the victory. “The kids understood what we wanted to do tonight, and they went out and did it,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “It was a great win, one we feel good about.”
G-MU contained Edmeston’s leading scorer, Blake Vibbard, holding him scoreless in the first half in building a 24-12 lead. The Panthers chopped that margin down to as little as three in the second half using a full-court press to swing the momentum.
“We were able to settle down and execute better in the fourth quarter, and we were able to hold them off from the foul line,” Hartman said.
The Raiders’ collective, after a 1-for-6 effort from the foul line in the first half, made 9-of-14 foul shots in the last quarter.
