UV Holiday Tournament
Oneonta 57, Sherburne-Earlville 43
NEW BERLIN – In the finals of the Unadilla Valley Holiday Tournament, Oneonta erased a six-point halftime deficit using a 16-0 run in the third and fourth quarters to take control of Tuesday’s contest against the Marauders.
Jacob Van Duesen, the tournament’s most valuable player, had 12 of his 17 points in the second half – all of them on the inside. Bryce Wooden also scored 17 points for the Yellowjackets.
“Than ran some stuff to get (Van Duesen) free on the block, and he really hurt us,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “We were trying to double down and help more, but we didn’t play good team defense.”
Oneonta took the lead late in the third quarter when Dan Baker scored on a layup cutting the S-E lead to 34-33, then Baker stole the ensuing layup and converted that into a layup giving his team the lead for good.
S-E hit five three-pointers in the opening half to take a 26-20 lead. After a 17-point first quarter, the Marauders did not score 10 in any quarter the rest of the way. “We struggled offensively, and we didn’t get enough stops on the defensive end,” Vibbard said. “Oneonta picked up its defensive intensity, and we weren’t getting the same looks. The looks we did get, we didn’t make too many.”
