Looking for help with that New Year's resolution?

NORWICH – With the New Year fast approaching, ‘tis the season to look ahead and plot a course for the year to come. According to usa.gov, two of the most common resolutions Americans make each year are to lose weight and to get fit. Those looking to get a jump start on fulfilling their fitness goals will have a chance to do so this Sunday as AIM Fitness hosts its third annual open house.
“AIM to be fit in the New Year” is the motto for the event, according to the fitness center’s proprietor, Eric Montalvo.
According to Montalvo, the Open House will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and include a variety of activities. From 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. a number of group exercise classes will be showcased on the main floor include Zumba, Pump, Step and a preview of AIM’s newest offering, a Cardio-Strength class.
“There will be trainers on hand to give tours and answer questions,” he added. The event will also include a DJ, refreshments, half-priced smoothies, free childcare for those working out and a host of giveaways.
“Everyone who walks through the door will pull a prize from the prize box,” Montalvo said, and have the chance to win everything from memberships and T-shirts to free day passes and free smoothies.
From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. AIM will be open to the public at no charge. The 20,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility offers more than 135 exercise machines, a 1,900 square-foot group exercise studio, locker rooms equipped with saunas and steamrooms, childcare facilities and a smoothie bar. To further assist people in reaching their fitness goals, there are eight trainers on staff, and more than 20 group fitness classes are offered each week.
In honor of the gym’s three-year anniversary, Montalvo is offering membership incentives to those who sign up on Jan. 2.
“If you sign up the day of the open house, you’ll get two additional months free,” he explained. As an added bonus, new members will also get a free one-on-one training session with the trainer of their choice.
Existing members can benefit, too. All they have to do is bring a non-member with them on Sunday and they’ll be entered into a drawing for a free three-month membership.
Sunday will also be the final day to sign up for the fourth installment of AIM’s Biggest Loser program, which kicks off Monday, Feb. 14. According to Montalvo, a total of 2,344 pounds were lost by participants in the first three rounds. In the most recent session, 57 individuals participated, a number he said they are on track to top in session 4.
How does the Biggest Loser work? According to Montalvo, the three month weight loss competition combines fitness and nutrition so that participants not only see results, but also learn how to be healthy and to work out efficiently and effectively.
Being a part of the program requires a substantial time commitment, as each participant must take part in 60 workouts - 5 per week - throughout the course of the program. Two of those weekly work outs are with their trainer and team, the other three are group fitness classes, of which they have more than 20 per week to choose from. The cost to participate is $199 in addition to gym membership.
AIM Fitness is located in the North Plaza, 6142 State Highway 12, Norwich. For more information, visit www.aimfitness.biz or call 336-9011.
