COPES CORNERS – G-MU, unbeaten over its first five games of the season, picked up where it left off last week at the DeRuyter Tournament scoring its highest point total of the season in beating Harpursville Tuesday in a non-league matchup.
After committing nine turnovers in the first quarter and clinging to a 13-12 lead, the Raiders settled down in the second stanza starting the quarter on a 14-4 run. Jon Scofield, Ian Edwards, and DeMario Reed all had two baskets, and point guard Kevin Davis hit an 18-footer from just inside the top of the key as G-MU built a 27-16 lead.
“We killed their press, and that got us off to a good, strong start,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “I was pleased to see more offensive balance, and Scofield looked like a post player tonight.”
Scofield capitalized on his inside looks at the basket on his way to a season-high 19 points. Reed, who missed the last two games and had just one practice under his belt the past 10 days, had 10 of his 14 points in the final quarter, and Edwards added 10 points to the mix.
“It was a good outing and a great win for us,” Hartman said. “We competed and attacked when we had the opportunity.”
