Police looking for suspect in New Berlin robbery

NEW BERLIN – A New Berlin liquor store owner was assaulted in a robbery Monday and fought off his attacker.

Police are looking for a man who entered New Berlin Liquors at about 5 p.m. Monday along North Main Street and assaulted the owner in what investigators claim was an attempted robbery.

In a joint investigation, the New Berlin Police and the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office said they are looking for a white male, 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall, 20 to 25 years of age, wearing blue jeans, a dark colored winter jacket and a red knit hat. He was last seen walking south on North Main Street from the store.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 337-1924 or 337-1970 or the New Berlin Police at 847-8900.

At the time of the robbery, the store’s owner was the only working.

“The suspect came into the store and asked a question about an item. The victim turned to get it and was struck in the back of the head with a liquor bottle,” said Undersheriff James E. Lloyd.
