Norwich tops UV on senior night

Norwich 51, Unadilla Valley 21
NORWICH – Norwich was awarded four forfeits against undermanned Unadilla Valley, and came home with its seventh win of the season on senior recognition night.
The Tornado (7-3) established control of the match early on break a 6-6 tie with wins by Frankie Garcia (125), Tanner Cummings (130), and Matt Thompson (135). Damian Marvin all but sealed the win with a 4-2 decision over Cody Marcinko, and Cody Bradbury (171) picked up a first-period pin in the night’s final matchup.
Marvin edged Cody Marcinko taking a 4-0 lead at the outset, and Garcia earned a pinfall over Dustin Badger. “That was a good win for Damian, and he looked good on his feet,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “Frankie getting a pin was a real surprise. We thought it would be close; it was a another quality win for him”
Zach Montgomery (160), a sectional place-winner last season, won by pin in the first period for UV, Tyler Olsen (119) earned a pin, and Dylan Aikins (145) scored a reversal and back points in the final 15 seconds to edge the Tornado’s Eli Oliver, 13-8.
Norwich competes in the Ilion Tournament this weekend. UV will participate in the Ross Cordell Tournament at Oneonta Friday and Saturday.

Girls’ Basketball

Oxford 43, Unatego 25
OTEGO – Oxford smothered Unatego defensively over the final 2 1/2 quarters to pull away for a road victory Thursday night.
Trailing the Spartans 19-12 in the second quarter, the Blackhawks closed the first half on a 6-0 run, and outscored Unatego 25-6 in the second half.
“We switched to man-to-man defense, and did a good job with that,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer.
The Spartans hit all three of their three-pointers in the first half to maintain the edge.
In the second half, Oxford’s Lacey Barry came off the bench to score eight of her 10 points including back-to-back three-point plays in the fourth quarter to spark the Oxford offense.
Haley Witchella led Oxford with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Julie Heggie added nine points. “Lacey and Julie stepped up, and several other players made nice plays,” Palmer said. “Unatego shot the ball well in the first half, but not as well in the second half. That was the big difference.”
Casey Manzanero had 10 points to lead Unatego.

DEPOSIT – Oxford returned from the holiday break to post an impressive road victory against Deposit Thursday.
Booker Davis and Andrew Golden had 14 points apiece to lead four Oxford players in double figures scoring. Davis added 13 rebounds, while Justin Schray and Ryan Moore had 10 points as well. “Hopefully we’re turning things around,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis. “The offense was pretty good and the defense was better. This is the way you want to look against a team that is a little down.”
The Blackhawks (4-5) host Bainbridge-Guilford on Tuesday.

Sherburne-Earlville 57, Frankfort-Schuyler 52
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville added one more league win to the ledger and is now in a tie for first place with Cooperstown after beating Frankfort-Schuyler at home Thursday night.
The Marauders (3-0, 6-2) received 19 points and 10 rebounds from Cameron Yerton. Ethan Johnson added 14 markers, and Randy Briggs 11. Yerton was especially prolific in the opening half hitting three of his four three-pointers and scoring 14 points as S-E built a 28-19 advantage.
“He’s a streaky shooter, and when he’s hot, we go to him,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard of Yerton. “We had three in double figures again and another with nine points. We’re spreading the wealth around, and it’s different guys.”
Frankfort-Schuyler, entering the contest with just one loss, made a run at S-E in the fourth quarter trimming a double-digit deficit down to five points. “We played excellent defense for three quarters and defensive rebounding was huge for us,” Vibbard said. “We struggled defensively with their screen-and-roll in the fourth quarter.”
The Marauders are at Canastota next Thursday.

OXFORD – On its senior recognition night, Oxford improved its mark to 6-4 on the season sweeping three games from the Spartans Thursday.
Teresa Morrison, Kalah Parks, and Taylor Simpson all had four aces for Oxford. Chelsea Roach led with four kills, four assists, and one block. Nicole Stoddard added five digs in the win.
Oxford hosts Walton on Saturday.
