Over $420,000 raised by the Chenango United Way

NORWICH – Despite the many challenges presented by a slowly recovering economy, the Chenango United Way raised a total of $420,921.69 – 96.7 percent of its 2011 campaign goal of $435,000.
While that number represents a decrease of approximately $2,000 from last year’s total, Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco reported an increase in participation countywide, with 1,917 contributing in 2010 as compared to 1,850 in 2009.
According to Monaco, the number of people who donate annually to the United Way is just as important as the actual amount of money raised, and 23 of the 45 companies which ran internal employee campaigns exceeded their campaign goal.
“This was a really difficult campaign due to the fact that so many people had less to donate, but we’re beginning to see some economic improvement and business growth,” stated Monaco. “People typically gave less, yet more people contributed, which, to us, is a good sign.”
Monaco said she hoped an improving economy will eventually lead to contributions returning to their pre-recession levels, as many divisions of the local United Way were down significantly in 2010, some by 50 percent or more. On a positive note, however, donations from several other divisions came in well over last year’s totals, she added.
Designations from other United Ways, including the Cincinnati United Way, a long-time contributor, totaled nearly $16,000, reported Monaco, who wished to congratulate the 200-plus Chenango United Way volunteers throughout the county who donated their time and effort. She also wished to thank all those who donated in 2010, no matter the amount.
Chenango United Way Co-Chair Debbie Barker said she was excited by the announcement and agreed with Monaco on a job well done by everyone involved.
“We were definitely concerned about participation across the county this year and the fact that it went up is amazing,” said Monaco. “It was really unexpected and it’s great to see so many people continuing to give. It’s a positive sign as the economy continues to recover.”
