Sherburne apartment wrecked by fire
SHERBURNE – A Sherburne man received minor burns Thursday night after gasoline he was draining down a bathroom sink ignited and caught fire.
Sherburne Fire Chief Patrick Lawrence said volunteers were on scene in about three minutes after being notified just after 9 p.m. and contained the 15A East State St. apartment fire.
Lawrence said the apartment was located above a village business and had one other unit in the building. The structure also shares walls with a number of other downtown buildings.
“Our first engine was out and on the scene in three minutes and found a working fire. Most of the fire was confined to the rear of the apartment in the bathroom and kitchen areas, with some minor extension to the attic. Crews made quick work of the fire in the room of origin and spent the next couple of hours chasing hot spots,” said the fire chief.
Lawrence commended his men, explaining attic fires often prove difficult to control. Damage to the building was mostly contained to the apartment and authorities later condemned the residence.
Patrick said the apartment was being rented by “young adults” who were keeping two motorcycles inside the unit. While working on the bikes, one of the occupants began emptying one of the gas tanks using a hose to drain it down a bathroom sink near a hot water heater. The hot water heater contained a pilot light, and after a few moments gas fumes gathered along the floor and caused a minor explosion, explained Lawrence.
“Fumes from the gasoline reached the pilot light and ignited. The resident received minor burns and was treated on the scene by the Sherburne Emergency Squad,” he said.
The Earlville Fire Department also responded and the North Norwich and Smyrna Fire Departments had crews on standby.
The Village of Sherburne Police Department also assisted in the incident, which closed East Main Street down four more than two hours.
“It was the quick response and work of our department that kept this incident from escalating into a major fire. Although adjoining businesses and apartments may have suffered from some minor smoke, they remained habitable,” said Lawrence.
