Norwich 73, Chenango Forks 38
NORWICH – With a epic STAC matchup against Seton Catholic Central looming on Saturday, it would have been natural for Norwich to look past Chenango Forks.
The Tornado shook off the rust of an eight-day layoff and overcame some early sloppy play to blow out the Blue Devils in Tuesday’s home encounter. “Offensively, we were a little ragged at the beginning, but once we got our legs under us, we seemed to be okay,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott.
It was the first home date for Norwich in 27 days after playing five straight road games. The Blue Devils traded baskets early with Norwich, and led briefly, 4-2. From that point, Norwich held a 61-17 advantage, one that begain with a 14-3 spurt to end the opening quarter.
Jon Foulds had three buckets in the first stanza, and Dennis Oralls completed a three-point play off a Forks turnover – one of 10 Blue Devils turnovers in the opening quarter.
It was a revolving door of Norwich substitutions throughout the second quarter, and the offense did not slow down a bit. Patrick Taylor’s put-back basket off an Eric Walling miss began an 11-1 salvo to start the second stanza. The lead was at 25 by halftime with the game well in hand for the host.
“It was too much transition play for them,” Abbott said. “We pressed and ran, and we forced them into quick shots. We did a nice job in terms of what we wanted to do, but I wasn’t pleased with the offensive execution early on.”
Foulds led Norwich’s balanced offense with 17 points. Oralls and Seth Thomsen added nine points each, while Nate Ashton and Josh Favaloro split 16 points evenly.
Norwich (10-0) puts its unbeaten record on the line against a Saints club that has one loss, that by one point to Johnson City. “They’re a very good team, especially at home,” Abbott said of the Saints. “We’ve proven we can play well on the road, and it will take a great effort on our part. We’ll go down there and give it our best shot. Being 10-0, not having a loss at this point of season sticks out like a bullseye.”
In the junior varsity game, Norwich’s Matthew Burke had 19 points, while Danny Carson and Robbie Wheeler scored 15 apiece in a 79-49 Tornado victory. The JV team improved to 6-4 with the victory.
Norwich plays at once-beaten Seton Catholic Central on Saturday.

G-MU 50, Cherry Valley-Springfield 44
COPES CORNERS – G-MU made up an eight-point halftime deficit to prevail over Cherry Valley-Springfield Tuesday night, and improve to 8-0 on the season.
DeMario Reed kick-started a G-MU offense that was sloppy and inefficient in the first half. Reed scored 10 in the third quarter, mainly on drives to the basket to draw his team within five points. Ian Edwards added a pair of three balls to account for all of the Raiders’ points in the quarter
In the fourth, Eddie Ray Cotton scored on a layup following a Jon Scofield pass, and Cotton added two free throws to tie the game at 41. Scofield converted a short turnaround jumper to give G-MU the lead for keeps. In the final 90 seconds, Edwards had back-to-back steals and layups, the latter making it 47-42 with 55.7 seconds left. CV-S, who beat G-MU by one point a season ago, managed just two free throws the rest of the way, and did not have a field goal in the final quarter.
“We wanted to attack the basket in the second half, and we really responded,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “We were down eight in the first half, and in the past, we would have stayed down. Now, we have the confidence that we can fight through it. There was no doubt that we could compete and come back. That’s a great feeling to have as a coach.”
Reed scored 18 points, his season-high performance, and Edwards tickled twine for 17, also his season-best scoring performance. The Raiders play at Milford on Friday.

Unatego 60, Greene 56
GREENE – Greene came up short on Tuesday night against Unatego as Travis Woods’ put-back basket in the final seconds sealed the victory for the Spartans.
Greene scored 39 points in the opening half and led by six points. The offense slipped in the second half, although the Trojans’ effort did not. “We didn’t want to go away and hide in the fourth quarter, like we did in the Hancock game,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “Tonight, we didn’t. We continued to attack the basket in the second half and play hard. We just did not finish our shots. I can’t be upset. Our effort was strong from the first to the fourth quarter. Now, we’re just not getting breaks.”
Will May hit five three-pointers and led Unatego with 19 points.
Jeff Carlin tossed in 14 points and pocketed seven steals to lead Greene. Evan Moxley was next with 12 markers, and Dan Treadwell scored 10.

SOUTH OTSELIC – Madison scored on a go-ahead layup, and hit an additional free throw in the waning seconds to pull out a close win at Otselic Valley Tuesday night.
OV grabbed a 49-48 lead after Karl Graham hit a pair of free throws. The rest of the way, the Vikes failed to cash in on their offensive possessions. “We’re getting good hustle, playing pretty good defense, and rebounding, but not being able to execute, finish plays, and move the ball on the offensive end, that’s what is hurting us.”
Mike Krutz hit three threes and led Madison with 15 points.
Jeff Pittsley scored 17 and Dusty Davis added 16 for OV, who play at McGraw on Thursday.

G-MU 43, Worcester 39
WORCESTER – G-MU won its sixth straight game, and needed to close out its victory Monday night with leading scorer Tanya Barnes on the bench.
Sabrina Brooks sealed the win making a pair of free throws with six seconds left – her only points of the game – to give the Raiders (4-0, 6-2) a four-point advantage.
Barnes, limited to a season-low nine points, fouled out with 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the game as Worcester nearly made up a 15-point deficit. “We started self-destructing a little bit in the fourth quarter, and Worcester made it close,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson.
Miranda Hill made up for Barnes’ tough night scoring a season-high 16 points, and Bri Lambert added 12 points. Adding key points were Blake Stensland, who converted a layup at the first-half buzzer – her only points – and Katie Bakhuizen, who had her only bucket scoring at the third-quarter horn. “I was pleased with the way we played, especially with Tanya on the bench,” Johnson said. “Worcester is a good team and all of its losses are to quality teams. That’s a good club, especially at home.”
The Raiders play at Cherry Valley-Springfield Wednesday.
