Norwich Family YMCA to host 2nd annual Chili Cook-Off

NORWICH – The Norwich Family YMCA will host its second annual Chili Cook-Off from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, with all proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society and the Boston-based Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Last year’s cook-off raised approximately $400 which went to aid UNICEF and the children of Haiti following a catastrophic January 2010 earthquake, said YMCA Youth and Family Director Bonnie Tiffany.
“We decided this year to keep the money raised a little closer to home,” said Tiffany. “This is such a wonderful family and community event, and it’s benefiting a great cause.”
The Chili Cook-Off will once again feature a panel of local celebrity judges, including Sue Grenier – a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America – Pet Street Station veterinarian Dr. Michael King and local resident Betsy Greeley.
Tiffany said she hoped to double the number of entries for the popular event this year, which will include numerous prizes, trophies, raffles and musical entertainment.
There are three categories for the Chili Cook-Off – Family, Organization and Restaurant – and awards will be presented for Best of Show in each, in addition to the People’s Choice and Best Presentation awards. Entry fees are $25 for the restaurants and organizations and $10 for families.
Those who do not wish to participate but would still like to make a donation are welcome to do so, stated Tiffany, who added a number of local businesses had contributed a variety of gift cards toward the day’s raffles.
All entries must be submitted and paid in full by Friday, said Tiffany, and those wishing to participate for the People’s Choice award must provide at least one gallon of chili. Entries must be in place by 1 p.m. on Saturday and be contained in either a large insulated container or Crockpot.
“The Chili Cook-Off went extremely well last year and we’re really hoping to increase the number of entries this year,” stated Tiffany. “There’s been a definite buzz about this year’s competition, especially considering the fact that everyone thinks they make the best chili.”
Entry forms are available at the front desk of the Norwich Family YMCA. For more information contact Tiffany at 336-9622, extension 28.
