Chenango runners take part in third annual Cupid’s Chase

BINGHAMTON – On Feb. 12, runners and walkers from Broome and Chenango Counties will join others across the nation in lacing up their running shoes to raise money for people with disabilities in the third annual Cupid’s Chase 5K.
“The Cupid’s Chase 5K Run is nationwide and will be run simultaneously in 22 other cities in the United States,” explained Jeffrey Winner, director of program services for Community Options, the not-for-profit agency which sponsors the fundraiser.
Headquartered in New Jersey, the organization serves individuals with developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injuries by helping them find employment, housing and increase independence. According to Winner, the agency’s Binghamton office serves approximately 185 individuals across a 10 county region, including Chenango.
The local Cupid’s Chase 5K event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the run/walk itself will begin at 10 a.m.
The cost to participate is $20 per person, which includes a long-sleeved event T-shirt and gift bag, as well as beverages and snacks before and after the race.
“Runners may register up to one hour before the race commences, however we do recommend/suggest pre-registering online if possible,” Winner said. This can be done at www.comop.org/cupidschase/binghamton.html.
According to the Oxford man, the 2011 event marks the third year in which Binghamton has hosted the race. Last year, 96 runners participated, around 25 percent of which were from Chenango County. The event raised in the neighborhood of $1,500, three times what it raised in year one.
This year, the agency has set its sights higher. Winner said they hope to attract 250 runners/walkers from Chenango and Broome counties and at least double its previous fundraising efforts.
According to Winner, all proceeds from the event stay locally.
“Donations of all varieties stay local and are used for program exclusively, which includes technologies, assistive devices, and resources for individuals with disabilities to utilize to increase their independence,” he explained.
Winner and other event organizers have recruited a number of local companies to sponsor the race. Those sponsors include Save-A-Lot, Life Water, Chobani, Manpower, Protel Telecommunications, Smith Productions, New York Central Mutual, The Stadium in Oxford and McNeil Jewelers.
Some of the event sponsors have given monetary donations, others have chosen instead to make an in-kind donation. McNeil’s falls into this latter category. The Norwich jeweler donated an engagement ring, which will be raffled off during the Valentine’s Day-themed event. The 14k white gold half-carat diamond ring is valued at $2,000.
“There are only 250 tickets to be sold, so you have a 1 in 250 chance of winning this gorgeous piece of jewelry,” Winner said. The drawing will take place at the award presentation following the race. Ticket holders need not be present to win.
