Two vie for Sherburne village seat

SHERBURNE – There are now two candidates running to fill an open seat on the Village of Sherburne Board, not just one.
Elena Casscles took out a petition for village trustee on Dec. 28 when they first became available, and has been planning to run for the post ever since being defeated in last March’s board elections.
Casscles said she was surprised the village office hadn’t contributed that fact for a previous article announcing the March 15th election date and Trustee Jack Staley’s candidacy.
Village Mayor William Acee appointed Staley to fill the unexpired term of Village Trustee Stephen M. Dunshee, who left office last June. Staley had initially told The Evening Sun that he would not be running, but called just before press time to change his stance.
The village office reported that Staley took out a petition on Jan. 11.
Casscles, who has lived, worked and volunteered in Sherburne since 1973, vied for two open seats on the board in March, but was defeated by incumbent, Christopher Tomaselli. She earned 184 to Tomaselli’s 228.
“I had a good run last time,” she said.
Casscles said the number of vacant store fronts and buildings in the village concern her. “My community is important to me. We have to do something to bring more jobs and industry to the village,” she said.
Casscles served on the Sherburne Earlville Board of Education for eight years, including six years as board president. She is a longtime member of the Sherburne Rotary and the Village Fire Department. In her professional life, the candidate was a training systems analyst for Victory Markets, providing technical support for 24 groceries.
Petitions are still available to potential candidates; they aren’t due to be filed until Feb. 8.
