Knights of Columbus sending contingent to March for Life
NORWICH – For a tenth straight year, the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus will sponsor a two-day bus trip this weekend to Washington, D.C., and the annual March for Life. Since its inception in 1974, thousands have walked in the March for Life in protest of abortion and related legislation.
Over the past two decades, between 100,000 and 250,000 pro-life advocates have typically participated in the annual event, which Norwich Knights of Columbus Grand Knight Jim Reynolds calls a life-changing experience.
“This is one of those things that you really have to experience to understand,” said Reynolds. “There’s just a whole lot of emotion and a lot of excitement.”
Reynolds said he feels it’s important to get more area youths involved in the March for Life this year, and he’s concerned with the lack of education displayed by many when it comes to the issue of abortion.
“People need to realize that this is a human being. Just because you can’t see it, it’s still there,” he added.
Co-organizer for the bus trip Margaret Schultz concurs with Reynolds on the life-changing nature of the March for Life, and also hopes to see more participation from younger generations.
“It’s a very encouraging, wonderful and inspiring atmosphere that draws hundreds-of-thousands from across the nation,” said Schultz. “There’s always a lot of youth involvement, which is the primary reason we wanted to get so many of our younger parishioners to take part.”
Schultz said a number of local residents, many who can not attend the event, donated toward the trip, and she “hopes to keep building this year after year.”
Highlights of the trip will include Mass at the National Basilica, a tour of the Theological Seminary at the Catholic University and the March for Life itself.
The Knights of Columbus-sponsored Washington, D.C., trip will depart at 11 p.m. on Sunday from St. Bartholomew’s, 30 Prospect St., and return there at 11 p.m. on Monday. Tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for students. For more information, contact Schultz at 337-2200 or Reynolds at 336-1311. For information on the March for Life visit www.marchforlife.org.
