Norwich home destroyed in fire
NORWICH – A Norwich family lost their home Monday after their doublewide’s roof collapsed during a fire.
The Norwich Fire Department responded to a 911 call at 10:24 a.m. Monday to 510 Oxford Road in the Town of Norwich.
Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo said crews arrived to find the southern part of the home ablaze. He said firemen tried to fight the fire from the inside, but were forced to retreat from the building as it became unstable and the roof collapsed.
The owners had just returned home as the fire began and called 911, the chief said.
Chawgo said the home was a “total loss” and reported one firefighter suffered minor injuries. He was transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital for evaluation and later released.
Crew remained on site until about 2:30 p.m. yesterday. The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation.
Norwich City Fire Marshall Jason Lawrence said the home was occupied by a man and his three children. The American Red Cross is currently working on providing the family aid, he said.
Norwich firemen also responded to a vehicle fire along County Route 23 at around 4 p.m. Monday. Chawgo said a woman’s car caught fire as she drove down the road.
The woman pulled over and crews put out a fire in the car’s rear storage area. Chawgo said a cause of the fire is still under investigation. Firemen closed down Rt. 23 for about 20 minutes during the incident and no one was injured. The vehicle suffered extensive damage.
The North Norwich and Norwich fire Departments also responded to a vehicle fire at around 1:30 p.m. Monday along State Highway 12 in the Town of North Norwich. A pick-up truck overheated and caught fire. Crews responded and the incident also closed down Rt. 12 for about 20 minutes. No injuries were reported.
