DVD Patrol

We’re heating things up, Patrollers! The DVD Patrol is keeping its’ promises and the Toddster does his best to deliver. Not only so we have some new movies on DVD but also some movie reviews for movies in the theater too. A team up is coming as well, but more on that later. Here we are!

New on DVD

Secretariat - A lot of stories these days has someone proving that they have what it takes to succeed. Disney has a knack or finding these kinds of movies. Based on a true story, Secretariat tells the tale of Penny Chenery (Diane Lane). Penny’s father owned a horse ranch and when he couldn’t, Penny stepped into help. When she started, she found a horse that she thought had the right stuff but needed help. A trainer named Laurin (John Malkovich) convinced her that they may have a chance. Will Penny’s horse be able to win it all? Lane has some other great DVDs including “Nights in Rodanthe” (with Richard Gere), “Killshot” (with Mickey Rourke), and “Chaplin” (with Robert Downey Jr) now in stores.

Red - Sometimes when people decide to make changes, they have more left to offer than they think. Based on the graphic novel, Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) always carried out his contracts working for the CIA. Frank also worked with his friends Joe (Morgan Freeman), Marvin (John Malkovich), and Victoria (Helen Mirren). He finds out that he and his friends have been targeted because they know too much. Now they have to break into the CIA to find out why. Can the team make things right before it’s too late? My sources tell me that Willis may return with Stallone in a sequel to “The Expendables.” A few DVDs with starring Willis in the past couple of years in stores now include “Cop Out’ (with Tracy Morgan), “The Surrogates,” and “Perfect Stranger” (with Halle Berry).

Also on DVD

Stone - People will do a lot of things to get what they want. Even if they’re in prison. Based on the play, Gerald “Stone” Creeson (Edward Norton) is set for another parole hearing and convinces his wife Lucetta (Milla Jovivich) to persuade Parole Officer Jack Mabry (Robert De Niro) to so everything he can to get his release set. The problem is Jack is not someone who can easily be swayed in any way but pressure might even be too much for him and his family. Is Jack going to vote Stone’s way? Another great movie to see De Niro and Norton in action is a movie I can recommend called “The Score” out on DVD now.

Now in Theaters

Tron: Legacy - Sometimes movies can be the start of something special. The movie “Tron” started with video game designer Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges). He discovered the games and the profits made off of them were not coming to him and he decided to find out why. A master computer program with its own mind found a way to bring Flynn into the digital world and tried to take him out. With the help of a security program called Tron (Bruce Boxlietner), Flynn survived and was able to make everything right, getting rid of the program and taking back everything that belonged to him. Twenty five years later, Kevin has disappeared and his son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) receives a signal from his father sending Sam in search of his dad into the same digital world that his father went into, but finds that it’s a lot different than before. Can Sam find his father and restore balance to his life as well as the digital one?
The Toddster’s Take - I always say, “Sequels are always a tricky proposition.” This one was a pleasant surprise. Waiting so long to do one can really be a bad idea. You also have to wait for the right one to come along. The wait was well worth it. The idea was a good one but was a bit long and could have been done a lot quicker. The special effects were great and the ending was left open. Hopefully, they won’t wait so long for another one. I also suggest you see the original available on DVD.

The Green Hornet - The road that a hero takes can be a hard one. Also, learning the lessons a hero has to learn to make him great aren’t easy ones. Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) always had a good heart but his dad never made life an easy one. Britt also liked to party a lot until his father was killed for trying to expose a criminal conspiracy. Britt inherits his father’s newspaper and wants to find out what his father died for. Kato (Jay Chou) worked for him fixing cars and Britt realizes he might have a lot to offer. They get together to investigate by going undercover as a criminal trying to take over the Underworld called “The Green Hornet.” Will Britt and his new partner find a way to make things work?
The Toddster’s Take - Rogen was actually very good in this role and proved he can be serious in a role that’s really not designed to be a comedy. Jay Chou who took over the Bruce Lee role was really incredible. The effects were very good and the story was not bad. This was also the first movie I have ever seen in 3D. I really hated that. It gave me a headache and it does make the movie pop. It’s really not needed and just a gimmick to make movie prices higher and boy did I pay. The movie is really the most important thing.

See, we told you we had a little something for everyone this time out. Our special teamup is on the way but the posse has been busy with some Progress coming. Until next week, the Toddster will be back.
