OXFORD – Oxford’s chances at defending its Midstate Athletic Conference championship took a severe hit Thursday night as Hancock upended the Blackhawks.
Hancock strengthened its hold on one of the top-four playoff spots taking control of the game in the third period. Mubarik Somerville scored nine points during a 17-6 stanza to create an 11-point lead. “In the third quarter, we either didn’t make a shot, or turned it over before we took a shot,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis.
Oxford’s trio of Tom Banicky, Somerville, and Eric Hicks combined for 42 points, and all three were targeted before the game by Davis as offensive threats. “It wasn’t anything we didn’t expect,” Davis said. “We just don’t take care of the ball and don’t make defensive stops when we need to. We’re struggling.”
Andrew Golden scored 14 points to lead Oxford, Booker Davis had 12, and Justin Schray 11.

Four Sidney players finished in double figures led by Alex Heil’s 17 points. Dylan Umbra added 15. “Their starting five, you can tell they’ve played together for a while,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “They share the ball and they share the scoring.”
Sidney expanded on a 21-13 lead after one quarter outscoring the Trojans (8-8) 21-5 in the second period. “They are a very disciplined team and they had too many easy layups in the paint,” Smith said. “We didn’t move our feet (on defense), body up or contest shots.
