St. Patrick’s parade celebrates 10th anniversary
SHERBURNE – It’s time to pull out and brush off the green again this year. Organizers of Sherburne’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade are well into the planning stages for the annual event, having lined up participants, selected a grand marshall and scheduled fundraising activities.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the village and organizers hope to make it a memorable one. Newly appointed Grand Marshall Lloyd Baker will join the past nine Grand Marshals who will be invited to ride on a special float.
The list of participants in the procession keeps growing, and to date includes three bagpipe groups. New to the lineup is the New York State Corrections Emerald Society. Returning favorites include the Hobart Pipe and Drum Corps, the Edward P. Maloney Memorial Pipe Band, the Claddagh Ring Dancers and the Johnston School of Irish Dance.
“The 2010 parade had over 50 groups participate and the committee hopes to increase that number,” said Theresa Mastro, co-organizer. Last minute participants are always welcome to join the line-up the day of the parade, she said.
Grand Marshall Baker will lead the procession from the Sherburne Fire Station, up North Main Street and to the Cotton Mill parking lot the green beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 6.
Following the parade, GLENRAVEL, featuring Mike Carnrike, will be performing at Fox Run Event Center on state Rt. 12B north of the village.
A fundraiser will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 2 at Gilligan’s Island, North Main Street, Sherburne. All proceeds will be used to offset cost of the parade.
Committee members are holding a raffle to support future parades. There are already more than 40 prizes, including a variety of gift certificates to area merchants, gift baskets and cash prizes. The grand prize is a handcrafted Irish quilt. Many new prizes are being donated daily.
Raffle tickets are available for purchase until the day of the parade. The drawing for prizes will be held following the parade at Fox Run.
Volunteers are encouraged to join the fun. For more information, call Theresa Mastro at 674-4573 or Kathy O’Connor at 674-9744.
