Norwich entertains Pats in STAC playoff game

NORWICH – Norwich has not played in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference playoff game in six seasons, much less host one.
At 7 p.m. tonight at Jack Jones Gymnasium, Norwich faces the daunting task of handing state-ranked Binghamton its first loss of the season. Tonight’s game is one of two STAC semifinals clashes with Oneonta and Horseheads squaring off in the other contest.
Norwich (10-1, 14-2) is riding an eight-game winning streak, and has not lost during this calendar year. The only teams to best the Tornado were Binghamton on Nov. 27 – over 2 1/2 months ago, and state-ranked Oneonta over the Christmas break.
The Patriots controlled the offensive and defensive glass, and overwhelmed Norwich for a spell in the second and third quarters to erase a double figures deficit, and cruise to a 63-44 victory. “We feel the two keys to this game are to take care of the ball and limit our turnovers, and we also need to rebound on the defensive end,” said Norwich second-year coach Josh Bennett. “They beat us pretty well on the offensive boards last time, and that added up to more points.”
During its current winning streak, Norwich has won six of the games by at least 17 points, and hasn’t played a close game in nearly three weeks. Bennett isn’t worried his team has lost that competitive edge that comes from playing in tight games. “I think the fact that we played this team before, the girls know what to expect,” the coach said. “We know we’re facing a big, athletic team, and we’ve had an intense few days of practice. In my two years, I think this is the most prepared we’ve been for a team. I know all of the girls are excited for this opportunity.”
Semifinals winners meet in the league championship game this Saturday.
