Singer, songwriter to release latest studio offering

OXFORD – Hamilton-based singer, songwriter and acoustic guitarist Melissa Clark will return to 6 On The Square this Saturday, as she prepares to release her latest studio offering in early spring.
With over 40 years of acoustic guitar and vocal experience, Clark said she’s currently putting the finishing touches on the album, recorded at Hamilton’s Orbital Sound. Comprised of acoustic guitar, voice and a touch of percussion, it’s a raw, stripped-down recording, she added.
“I was playing unplugged music before it was even called unplugged,” laughed Clark, referring to the popular MTV program. “It’s definitely gotten better over the years and this is how you would hear me if I were playing live, so it’s pretty much a solo project.”
Drawing inspiration from a variety of artists such as the Beatles, Eric Clapton, the Eagles, Bonnie Raitt, Marc Cohn, Elvis Presley and Mary Chapin Carpenter, Clark described her typical live performance as a blend of original material and covers drawn from her early days learning the guitar.
Of primary importance to the singer and songwriter, however, is the chance to share her music and a lifetime of experience with the audience, stated Clark.
“It’s almost like a conversation, the audience interaction,” said Clark of the special bond between the musician and the listener. “You get to share a little bit of humor and the stories behind the songs, many of which are autobiographical.”
That autobiographical nature will also be featured on the soon-to-be-released album, added Clark, particularly on songs such as “A Little Time” and “Heart of A Champion.”
Another song under consideration for the album, “The Key,” addresses the “universal theme of allowing oneself to become a victim of their own feelings,” said Clark, “until realizing that our happiness lies within our own control and not from some outside influence.”
In the end, her music is a representation of the life she’s led, she added.
Featuring a dozen original tunes, the album will soon be available at www.cdbaby.com and Clark’s own website, www.melissagclark.com.
Melissa Clark will perform from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday – with special guest and fellow singer/songwriter Jacqui Raynes opening the show – at 6 On The Square, 6 LaFayette Park. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 on the night of the show. For more information on Clark, visit www.melissagclark.com.
