Owner wants new chapter for downtown book store
NORWICH – Established in July of 1982, the First Edition Book Store has been a favorite stop for downtown shoppers, and for twenty-plus years – first as an employee and later as its owner – lifelong Norwich resident Lisa Mody has dedicated herself to its success.
Recently, however, Mody said she’s decides it’s time to move on and pursue a different path. She’s hoping to find a buyer for the shop who’s willing to keep the business intact for future generations to enjoy.
“It’s taken me a few years to make this decision and it’s been tough. I’ve given this very important downtown business my attention and devotion for many years,” said Mody. “Once both of my children had begun school, I needed to see if I could return to giving the store my full attention and, though I know what needs to be done for the future growth of First Edition, I’ve decided at this stage of my life to change my focus.”
The most difficult part of letting the store go, Mody said, will be saying goodbye to the customers who have made the past two decades such an unforgettable experience.
“That’s what I’m going to miss the most, not seeing those people all the time and the conversations we had,” said Mody. “They’re just a wonderful clientele and it’s truly been a joy.”
Mody said her time at First Edition was vital to her becoming more involved in the community, through the Merchants Association and annual events such as the Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival, the Pumpkin Festival and the summer sidewalk sales.
“This would be a great opportunity for anyone who’d like to have a voice in the future of downtown Norwich,” she added.
Mody said she believes the store would be ideal for a former teacher or retired professional who’d already developed a solid network and connections within the community, and the business is full of potential expansion into other areas of merchandise.
“It was a very exciting and valuable experience for me to become the store owner of such a prestigious downtown business when I was 28 years old, and I could certainly see a retired individual or a young and vibrant person enriching their life by taking over the store,” said Mody. “To own a bookstore was my dream and the First Edition fulfilled that dream. I’m hoping it can become a vital part of a new owner’s life experience. It’s been a part of my life longer than my husband or my children and a valued part of our downtown Norwich for over 25 years.”
Most importantly, Mody said she’d like to see First Edition continue as a part of the downtown Norwich business community.
“Norwich would not be the same without the First Edition Book Store,” she added.
The sale would include the full inventory of the store, added Mody, who said she’d initially remain available for any necessary assistance or advice in regards to business contacts and accounts. For more information call 334-6293.
