Relay for Life hopes to 'Strike Out Cancer' Saturday

NORWICH – Relay For Life of Chenango County is urging local families, businesses, Relay teams and bowling enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels to help Strike Out Cancer from 1 p.m. to midnight on Saturday at Plaza Lanes.
Now in its fourth year, the annual event is the first of three committee-run fundraisers to be held by the local Relay For Life, said event chair Marie DeSarro. It’s a fun-filled opportunity to help the organization offset expenses for the actual Relay For Life event in July, she added.
“There are a lot of things behind the scenes that have to be paid for, such as use of the fairgrounds and garbage disposal, and we’ve been very lucky over the past couple of years that those expenses have been fairly low,” said DeSarro. “Because the community is so supportive of Relay, many items and services are now donated, but there are always costs involved, and the Strike Out Cancer bowling fundraiser helps with those costs.”
Event organizer and entertainment chair Chris Greeley added that without these fundraisers, the organization would not have the cash it needs for important down payments and deposits which are crucial to Relay, as many of the rental items necessary for Relay For Life require an early deposit to ensure they’re available come July.
DeSarro and Greeley stressed that those interested in bowling in support of Relay on Saturday must present a Strike Out Cancer coupon when paying for their games and shoes. The coupon can be found in this week’s Norwich Pennysaver, online at relayforlife.org/chenangocountyny and in today’s edition of The Evening Sun.
Once the coupon is presented, proceeds from games, shoe rentals, food and drinks sold at the event will benefit the local Relay For Life, which has a goal of $155,000 for 2011. In addition, those who present the coupon on Saturday will be entered into a drawing for a $100 pre-paid VISA card.
