Bonney tabbed as Liberty League Rookie of the Year
GENEVA – Hobart College freshman forward Richie Bonney (Norwich/Norwich, N.Y.) was tabbed the Liberty League Rookie of the Year in a vote of the conference’s coaches. Bonney was also a unanimous pick to the league’s all-rookie team.
A six-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week, Bonney ranked among the league leaders in rebounds (fifth, 6.6), defensive rebounds (seventh, 4.24), offensive rebounds (third, 2.4/g), and free throw percentage (13th, .699). He produced double-doubles in his first two collegiate contests, including a season-high 16-rebound effort at Ithaca. Bonney also scored a season-high 18 points, all before halftime, in a win at Rensselaer.
At 19-7, Hobart finished one win shy of the school record for wins in a season. The Statesmen went 11-3 in conference play earning the top seed in the Liberty League Championship tournament. In the opening round, Hamilton College upset Hobart 62-60 denying the Statesmen an opportunity to play in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
McDermott named to NEAC all-conference team
CAZENOVIA – Greene High School graduate, Megan McDermott, was recently named a North East Athletic Conference basketball league second-team all-conference player.
McDermott, a sophomore for Cazenovia College, started all 25 games this past season for the Wildcats, who finished 12-13 overall. She averaged 13.7 points, second on the team, and 7.2 rebounds per game. McDermott also picked up over two steals a contest and shot 41 percent from the field.
McDermott was a three-sport varsity athlete for Greene, and played on the Trojans’ 2009 Section IV Class C championship team that reached the state semifinals.
