ONEONTA – South Kortright played to its number one seed in the Section IV Class D Tournament, and eliminated G-MU from the postseason Tuesday night at SUNY Oneonta’s Fieldhouse.
Already leading 21-10 at halftime, the Rams more than doubled their advantage during a 19-7 third quarter. Courtenay Chambers and Ashley Moeller hit three-pointers, and Robin Ward scored seven of her 19 points moving the lead to 40-17.
“The third quarter was tough for us, and we had to play a zone because of foul trouble,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “We turned it over a few times, and they hit some shots.”
South Kortright moves into the finals against either Charlotte Valley or Schenevus. Either team will have a tough time beating the Rams, Johnson said. “They do so many good things, and the way they’re playing now, they’ll be tough to beat,” he said. “They’re tough, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they go a ways at the state level.”
G-MU finishes 17-4 overall nearly book-ending its season with losses to South Kortright. “We wanted to win the league championship, we accomplished our goal there, and we’re certainly proud of that,” Johnson said. “The team we played tonight was playing at a higher level.”
Tanya Barnes scored nine for the Raiders, and she finishes her four-year varsity career with 1,135 points.
