Sherburne’s St. Paddy’s Day parade celebrates 10th anniversary

SHERBURNE – Representatives from about 50 organizations will march in Sherburne’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, including three bagpipe groups, three Irish dance groups and a special float commemorating the parade’s 10th anniversary.
The float will carry 2011 Grand Marshall Lloyd Baker and the parade’s past nine Grand Marshals.
A last-minute fundraiser will be held from 4 to 8 tonight at Gilligan’s Island, North Main Street, Sherburne. All proceeds will be used to offset cost of the parade.
The action is set to begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at the corner of West State Street and North Main Street in the village. Marchers and floats will proceed north to the former cotton mill parking lot. Groups are welcome to join in the festivities by calling Theresa Mastro at 674-4573.
The parade originally began in the 1970s with Denny O’Connor marching up North Main St. from the Sherburne Inn, beating his drum and leading walkers to Lewis’ Restaurant. After O’Connor’s passing, the marchers stopped until 2001 when Betty McDaniel organized approximately 80 individuals to march up North Main carrying banners and flags. Twenty-one groups participated the following year, and the parade goes on today.
Irish celebrations continue following the parade at Fox Run Event Center on Rt. 12 B in Sherburne with the Glenravel (featuring Mike Carnrike) Band and the Edward P. Maloney Pipe Band performing. The Johnston School of Irish Dance from Utica will perform a few Irish songs. There will also be a children’s raffle for six pots of gold and a surprise grand prize. The event is free to the public.
Raffle tickets are available for purchase until the day of the parade. The drawing for prizes will be held following the parade at Fox Run.
The committee wants to thank Mayor Acee, Village Trustees, the Sherburne Fire Department and the Sherburne Police Department for their support of this great event each year.
The parade will include New York State Assemblyman William Magee, local politicians, St. Malachy’s church float with St. Patrick on board, a float with former Grand Marshals: Pete Lawrence, Frank Brady, Peggy O’Connor, Steve Perrin, Jim Webb, Dave Turner, Stephen Joyce, Bob Tenney and Shawn Kelly on board, the New York State Corrections Emerald Society, Hobart Pipe and Drum Corp., Edward P. Maloney Memorial Pipe Band, Claddagh Ring Dancers, Johnston School of Irish Dance, Joyce-Holbrook Law Firm float, Sherburne Historical Society, NBT Bank/Mang, Pinney American Karate, Sherburne Fire Department, New York State Police, Hidden Ponds 4-H Club, Sherburne Big M, Zumba Fitness float, SHASTA, Frontier, cub scouts, S-E Cheerleaders, and S-E Middle School Honor Society.
