Coffee stand reopens under new ownership
NORWICH – Coffee lovers traveling Route 12 south of the city are in luck as the recently-reopened Java Joe’s is once again offering its wide variety of caffeinated and non-caffeinated beverages.
Featuring a fire-roasted Italian blend of coffee that new owner Melvin “Dusty” Magrath called the “smoothest coffee I’ve ever had,” Java Joe’s offers a wide variety of other iced and hot drinks, including teas, cappuccinos, lattes, steamers, espressos, fruit smoothies, blended creams and more. Not to mention Magrath’s signature, homemade whipped cream.
Snacks such as made-from-scratch brownies and carrot cake bars will be available within the next week, added Magrath, and customers can purchase a Java Joe’s membership for $20, with which they’ll receive a discounted price on all purchases and a 16-ounce “Going Green” tumbler.
Magrath said he put a lot of effort into getting the business prepared for his official reopening last week, installing new cabinets and countertops, and giving his limited workspace a much-needed cleanup. And while he admits there’s still some work to do on the drive-up booth’s exterior, he’s decided to wait for Mother Nature’s cooperation.
Since opening, Magrath reported that business has nearly doubled on a daily basis.
“The amazing thing is that I wasn’t even looking to start my own business,” stated Magrath, who has over ten years in food management experience. “Business has been really good though and I’m very pleased.”
Magrath said he plans to add a full-time assistant manager position in the near future – especially if business continues as it has – in addition to a part-time spot this spring or summer. He added he’s been pleasantly surprised by the amount of positive feedback he’s received so far, and wished to thank his growing customer base for their kind words and encouragement.
“It’s not my goal to make a killing, but just to make a living,” said Magrath, who added all tips received at Java Joe’s are donated to a children’s ministry in Haiti. “I just love talking and visiting with the people, and being able to do something to make their day a little bit happier.”
Java Joe’s, adjacent to Seaman’s Auto Sales on Route 12 South, is open from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Monday. For more information call 745-3351.
