Oxford Drama Club presents “Carousel” this weekend

OXFORD – Song and dance will abound this weekend as the talented young thespians of the Oxford High School Drama Club take to the stage for their production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s award winning Broadway musical, “Carousel.”
Audiences will have two chances to see the show: at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights in the Oxford Academy Performing Arts Auditorium. Tickets are $4 for students and senior citizens; $5 for adults.
Based on a work by Ferenc Molnar, “Carousel” follows the ill-fated romance of carnival barker Billy Bigelow (Jacob Carr) and factory worker Julie Jordan (Hailey Branham), as well as the relationship of Carrie Pipperidge (Megan Murphy) and Enoch Snow (Addison Kubik). The story takes a tragic turn when, desperate for money, Billy attempts a robbery. When it goes wrong, he takes his own life.
A note to audiences: Bring tissues. Described by Director Mike Moran as a tear-jerker, “Carousel” is not the light-hearted fare Oxford’s drama club has favored in recent years with its productions of “Hello, Dolly!” and “Once Upon a Mattress.”
According to Moran, the students are undaunted by the show’s weightier subject matter. In fact, it was the students themselves who chose to tackle the classic theatrical production this year.
“We have spent a little more time discussing why characters made the choices they made and the actors and actresses have worked hard on their character development,” he said.
Their efforts are evident in their enthusiasm during high-energy numbers like “June is Busting Out All Over,” and equally so in more dramatic scenes.
It isn’t the subject matter that proved to be the most daunting task, however.
“The actual challenge of this particular show is the level and length of music involved,” Moran said. “Again, the students have risen to the challenge and the audience is sure to enjoy the beautiful music of Rodgers and Hammerstein.”
Out of deference to the subject matter, Moran has written a director’s note for the program addressing Billy’s suicide and the poor choices the character makes in the play. A suicide awareness and prevention display will also be set up in the hallway outside the auditorium both before the show and during intermission.
The Oxford Drama Club will perform “Carousel” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Oxford Academy Performing Arts Auditorium. Tickets, which will be available in advance from the school office and at the door.
