Irish flag to fly over Norwich for St. Patrick’s Day
NORWICH – The Irish community will again raise the green, white and orange colors over the City of Norwich Thursday at the annual St. Patrick’s Day Flag raising ceremony in West Side Park.
The event’s organizers, Chenango County Court Judge W. Howard Sullivan and Norwich City Supervisor Jim McNeil, said this year’s flag raising will likely be shorter than last year’s, which included warm weather, music and hundreds of spectators.
McNeil said the ceremony begins at noon and will take about 10 minutes. He said organizers would make brief remarks to honor their local heritage and then lead the crowd in a couple of Irish songs.
The Chenango County Board of Supervisors grants a special request each year to fly the Irish flag just below the American flag in front the courthouse from noon on St. Patrick’s Day until the end of the next day.
“The day is for the Irish in the community to remember the heritage we all share,” said McNeil.
