Dance celebrates the death of winter

NORWICH – The Norwich Dance Club will be holding a winter clothes donation event during their “Winter Funeral” Ballroom Dance to be held on Friday at the Renaissance Building located in downtown Norwich.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to learn about the club and to bring donations of coats, hats, sweaters, and scarves. Winter clothing essentials will be donated to the Pink Door, a program of the Chenango Memorial Auxiliary group,” said Ryan who also added “This year we want to exceed our goal of collecting more winter clothes so we drop off times will be available to collect donations during the month of March from people who can not attend the event.

The Winter Funeral is an annual dance known for the opportunity to laugh and dance to say farewell to snow, gloomy days and typical winter bugs. “We encourage people to dress in black and bring treats to share with others during the band break. Normally, death is not treated as a celebration; but after the winter we’ve had … a musical ritual symbolic of lowering the casket of winter while ushering in the warmth of spring seems quite appropriate,” said Ryan about their annual event.
