Dance celebrates the death of winter
NORWICH – The Norwich Dance Club will be holding a winter clothes donation event during their “Winter Funeral” Ballroom Dance to be held on Friday at the Renaissance Building located in downtown Norwich.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to learn about the club and to bring donations of coats, hats, sweaters, and scarves. Winter clothing essentials will be donated to the Pink Door, a program of the Chenango Memorial Auxiliary group,” said Ryan who also added “This year we want to exceed our goal of collecting more winter clothes so we drop off times will be available to collect donations during the month of March from people who can not attend the event.
The Winter Funeral is an annual dance known for the opportunity to laugh and dance to say farewell to snow, gloomy days and typical winter bugs. “We encourage people to dress in black and bring treats to share with others during the band break. Normally, death is not treated as a celebration; but after the winter we’ve had … a musical ritual symbolic of lowering the casket of winter while ushering in the warmth of spring seems quite appropriate,” said Ryan about their annual event.
Live Music will be provided the Chenangoans, a twelve piece professional band. The musical selection will be varied; including foxtrots, waltzes, polkas and swing, plus Latin American favorites such as the mambo, bolero, salsa, meringue and cha-cha. The Norwich Dance Club is a group of diverse individuals who meet each week to learn, practice and enjoy the art of Ballroom Dance The club meets every Friday from 7-9 p.m. About the Dance Club organization Ryan added, “The Dance Club was created to spread the love of dance. We welcome people of all skill levels. We get together learn to dance to the best of each person’s ability.”
The Renaissance Building is located at 15 S Broad St in downtown Norwich, directly above Two Sister’s Café. The Winter Funeral dance will be held Friday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The fee of $10 per person supports the cost of the band currently underwritten by a generous contribution from Arnell Music.
