YMCA Dolphins swim well at state meet
EAST MEADOW – A school of Norwich YMCA Dolphins reported for duty and cruised to impressive finishes at the 2011 New York YMCA State Championship swim meet held this past weekend at the Nassau County Aquatics Center. The Dolphins team was one of over 30 teams competing in this annual event.
Four Dolphins earned finishes in the top 16 in each individual event they swam. Lauren Llewellyn, 10, earned a third-, fifth-, and eleventh-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle, 50-yard freestyle and 50-yard butterfly events, respectively.
Daniel Zieno, 12, placed second, third and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard freestyle races, respectively.
In the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard freestyle events, Erin Gawronski swam for seventh, ninth and fourteenth spots, respectively. Her time in the 200 IM also set a new Norwich YMCA record.
Curtis Woodard, 14, also made impressive finishes by earning places of third, seventh and fourteenth in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM and 100-yard butterfly races.
Other Dolphins earned top 16 spots as well. Of the junior racers, Abby Voce, 10, earned a twelfth in the 50-yard freestyle race, while Skylar Wenzel, 9, placed fifteenth in the 200-yard freestyle race.
Top 16 finishes by senior Dolphins included a thirteenth by Ravyn Benedict, 14, in the 100-yard backstroke and a fourteenth spot by Nicholas Mooney, 14, in the 100-yard breaststroke. Gregory Todd, 14, swam for the fourteenth place in the 500-yard freestyle race. Hannah Collier, 16, earned thirteenth place for her swim in the open 200-yard backstroke race, while Talon Schroeder, 17, finished tenth in the 500-yard freestyle race.
Other Dolphins State qualifiers who participated were Saige Benedict, 9, Melissa Stroh, 9, Skylar Wenzel, 9, Abby Voce, 10, Danika Tworkowsky, 11, Rachel Zieno, 14, Joseph Stagliano, 14, Taylor Zieno, 15, Krissy Stroh, 15, Kristina Reynolds, 16, and Shannon Curley, 17.
