It’s A Flash From the Past at the Historical Society Museum

NORWICH – The Chenango County Historical Society will unveil its latest exhibit – A Flash From the Past: Chenango County Photographers – from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the county museum, 45 Rexford St.
The exhibit features dozens of historical photographs and equipment from the county’s early days – following the invention of modern photography – through the late 1970s, as well as biographies on area photographers and information on photographic inventions which originated in Chenango County, according to CCHS Director Alan Estus.
In addition, the work of familiar area photographers such as Casey Jones, Wes Gould and Gordon Hawley will be on display, said Estus. Hawley, along with wife Louise, was instrumental in the creation of the display, he added, supplying cameras from his collection and contributing funds to offset a portion of expenses for the exhibit.
Estus credited Norwich High School Art Educator Brenna Gray and student John Antonowicz as well for their dedication to the project – the two researched, planned and designed the exhibit – and said it would never have gotten off the ground without them.
“They were such a big part of this and the fact that they were able to identify and realize the historical significance of these collections is why this is such a quality exhibit,” stated Estus. “Basically, we were able to match an expert in the field of photography to the topic itself.”
Gray said she and Antonowicz put in countless hours on the project and cited his dedication to preserving the history of Chenango County, knowledge of local history and love of museum studies as crucial to the exhibit’s success.
“It was an amazing thing to be called upon to be involved with an exhibit that completely relates to the curriculum I teach at the high school,” stated Gray, who currently instructs students in digital photography at NHS. “Every semester we open with the history of photography and it’s amazing that now I’ll be able to invite my students, past and present, to see all of the actual equipment and share that their county has a rich history with the medium.”
The museum’s gift shop will be open for the evening and refreshments will be served. For more information call 334-9227.
