Afton takes steps to repeal road use law

AFTON – In a special meeting last Thursday, members of the Afton Town Board presented legislation that would repeal an existing law prohibiting natural gas-related trucking on town roads.

The road use law, Local Law #3 of 2010, currently prohibits natural gas-related trucking from within 1,000 feet of schools, residential neighborhoods consisting of five or more houses, hospitals and health care centers. The board narrowly adopted the measure by a vote of 3 to 2 in early December, after which it was filed and certified by the state.

The regulation did not restrict trucking related to fuel, septic, garbage, propane or other industries, according to Supervisor Robert Briggs, who called the special meeting earlier in the week.
