Arts Council exhibit, concert highlight hometown talent

NORWICH – The Chenango County Council of the Arts announces the return of two Norwich artists for a weekend of visual and performing arts called “Home is Where the Art Is.”
Friday will showcase painter and sculptor Edmond Caputo in the opening of a month-long exhibit of his works in the Mariea Brown & Raymond Loft Galleries, and on Saturday the second concert of the CCCA Chamber Series will present Megan Higley Phillips in an evening of American and Romantic works for the piano.
Edmond Caputo was born in 1985 in Norwich, and raised nearby on Chenango Lake. He has studied at the State University of New York at Brockport and is currently finishing his first year in a Master of Fine Arts program at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Caputo is a sculptor and painter who infuses his artwork with bold and vivid colors. His work deals with a combination of abstract and figurative representations of life and its journey. His artwork has been exhibited at numerous locations, such as the home of the President at RIT; State of the Art Gallery, Ithaca; and the Rochester Contemporary Art Center, Rochester. Caputo has received awards for his artwork, including “Most Adventurous Concept” at the Kismet Exhibit at SUNY Brockport and “Best in Show” at the Members’ Exhibit at the Chenango County Council of the Arts.
A native of Norwich, Megan Higley Phillips, daughter of Sterling and Jane Higley, began her piano studies at the age of five with Mrs. Margaret Hall and continued her studies through middle school and high school with Mrs. Vivien Wu. She attended Norwich High School where she actively participated in all of the music programs. Upon graduation she was awarded the Monday Evening Musical Club Scholarship. Majoring in piano performance, Ms. Phillips graduated cum laude from Bucknell University, studying with Dr. Barry Hannigan, and received a Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory while studying with Patricia Zander. After moving to Rochester, she became a member of the faculty at the Nazareth College Preparatory Department. In addition to teaching at Nazareth, Phillips held the position of program coordinator for the department for several years and maintained a private studio in her home for 15 years. She also served as staff accompanist at Nazareth College and the Rochester Institute for Technology. She continued her classical studies with Patricia Hanson at Eastman School of Music, and recently began exploring jazz piano with teacher Richard Delaney at the Hochstein School of Music. She is the keyboardist and pianist for the Penfield Symphony Orchestra, and is a member of the Wednesday Morning Musicale and the Fairport Musicale, the latter of which she is currently president.
As a solo and chamber musician, Phillips performs regularly in the Rochester area. She recently appeared on the Eastman at Rochester Square Concert Series, Music for a Sunday Afternoon Annual Benefit for the Penfield Symphony Orchestra, and the Jewish Home of Rochester Concert Series sponsored by the Marian Poze Fund. She was among nearly a dozen performers who returned to Norwich last spring to perform for the 100th anniversary of the Monday Evening Musical Club Scholarship Recipients Alumni Concert. She is part of a chamber music project featuring the “Timeless Tales” pieces, written for piano, oboe, string trio, and narrator, presenting these whimsical and educational works to young audiences in the Rochester Schools. This summer she will be performing in the Orvieto Musica Chamber Music Festival in Orvieto, Italy.
The gallery opening for Edmond Caputo’s “Best in Show” begins at 5 p.m. on Friday. The exhibit will run through May 5. There is no charge for the opening reception.
Megan Higley Phillips’ concert will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $15 general admission, with discounts for seniors and members of the CCCA. Youth 18 and under will be admitted for free. Phillips’ performance is being underwritten by Wells Fargo Advisors and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
